November is the month that traditionally raises awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide. Movember has its origins traced back to Adelaide in 1999 where a group of young men who are reputed to have coined the term "Movember" and the idea of growing moustaches for charity throughout the month of November. The group started with 80 men from Adelaide and soon became a nationwide phenomenon.
Cairns Barrier Reef Lions Club is joining the Movember theme this year by organising a movie night at the Smithfield cinemas and donating all proceeds to the Lions Prostate Cancer Research. The movie is Goodbye Christopher Robin and follows the journey of the author Alan Alexander Milne who wrote the timely classic Winnie the Pooh who named the main character after his son Christopher Robin Milne and the cartoon characters after the toys his son played with.
Tickets can be purchased by contacting Norm on 0430 030 357 or Rachel on 0487 687 191, costing $25.00 for the movie and either a beverage (wine or beer) or a midi combo (small drink and popcorn). Please feel free to share this event with your friends.

Lions Club International Code of ConductUpdated 2018
“LIONS - SUPPORTING DROUGHT AFFECTED FARMERS AND COMMUNITIES”The Lions of North Queensland have mobilised in their efforts to assist Drought Stricken Farmers, Graziers and their Communities as crippling drought continues in large parts of Eastern Australia, and including many areas of North and Western Queensland.
When disaster strikes the Australian Lions Foundation is amongst the first to offer disaster relief. Through the Australian Lions Foundation, our local Lions Clubs and Members are supporting struggling families and communities as they battle to cope with the effects of one of the most crippling droughts on record.
Lion John Muller, Public Relations Chairperson for Lions in North Queensland, said “We are very appreciative of the generous nature of North Queenslanders to support others when they are in need, and it is now our turn to give back to those affected by drought who have previously assisted us with financial donations following recent cyclones and floods – especially after cyclone Yasi. And through our Australian Lions Foundation, every cent raised goes directly where it is needed most – to support those in need. There are absolutely no deductions to cover administration costs as is the case with some other charities and foundations – 100% raised is distributed” John said.
How can you help? Teams of Lions are out in force across North Queensland collecting funds for the Australian Lions Foundation Drought Relief Appeal. This will culminate in a major effort over the next week across several locations within the Townsville and Charters Towers area. Just look for our Lions Public Relations Trailer, and the team of friendly Lions with their collection buckets and tins close by. They will be very visible in their Lions shirts!
